Stewart, Schumacher, Franchitti make HOF

-

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, threetime Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti and NHRA legend Don Schumacher are among seven people chosen for induction into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.

The 2019 class was announced Friday at Daytona International Speedway.

The seven received the most votes from a list of 43 nominees from all walks of motorsports.

The others chosen for induction are automotive and racing pioneer Augie Duesenberg, sports car engineer Phil Remington, motorcycle road-racing champion Kevin Schwantz and race queen Linda Vaughn.

The class will be enshrined during a ceremony in March.

Hall of Fame president Ron Watson says “deserving and dynamic” come to mind when he thinks about the class.

Chase Elliott turned a lap of 194.045 mph to win the pole for the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway and give sagging Chevrolet a much-needed boost.

Elliott, who sprained his right ankle earlier this week “horsing around in the pool,” had won two poles at the Daytona 500. He starts from the top Saturday night as the Hendrick Motorsports driver goes for his first career win.

Hendrick teammate Alex Bowman joins Elliott on the front row. Bowman won the pole for this year’s Daytona 500 in the debut race for the Chevy Camaro.

Kyle Larson won the Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Friday night when Justin Haley’s late pass in overtime was ruled illegal.

A part-time driver in the series, Haley used a stellar move to pull off a stunning pass that looked as if it would lead him to victory lane. But Haley crossed below the double-yellow line around the inside of the track, and NASCAR ruled it an improper pass. Haley finished 18th. Larson edged Elliott Sadler at the finish line.
