A man has died one week after he was involved in a fight at a bus stop on the East Side, Columbus police said.

Brandon Nicholson, 41, of Columbus, died Monday night at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he had been taken by medics July 23.

Officers were called to a bus stop at South James Road and East Main Street, in the Eastmoor neighborhood, shortly after 8 p.m. on a report of a fight. They found Nicholson unresponsive with a head injury and in critical condition.

Nicholson was seen arguing with another person at the bus stop, police said, and that escalated into a fight. The nature of the argument remains under investigation.

A pair of witnesses told police that Nicholson had started the argument and attacked the other person. When that person fought back, Nicholson was knocked unconscious, police said.

That person fled the bus stop before police arrived.

Police say they know who that person is but they aren’t identifying the person while the investigation continues. Nicholson’s death is considered a homicide, but no charges were filed as of Tuesday.

Anyone with information about Nicholson or the fight is asked to contact the Columbus Police Division’s homicide unit at 614645-4730 or leave a tip with Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.

Nicholson’s death is the city’s 61st homicide of 2018.
