GMS Racing tabs Elliott to race at Road America

NASCAR Hall of Fame member Bill Elliott is coming out of retirement. GMS Racing announced on Twitter that the 62-year-old Elliott will drive the No. 23 Chevrolet at Road America in Wisconsin on Aug. 25.

Elliott hasn’t competed in any of NASCAR’s national series since he drove in the

July Cup race at Daytona in 2012.

Coughlin Jr. top qualifier in Pro Stock at Northwest

Jeg Coughlin Jr. of Delaware topped the Pro Stock field at the CatSpot NHRA Northwest Nationals in Kent, Washington, as his Friday run stood through Saturday’s two sessions at Pacific Raceways.

Coughlin posted a 6.501second run at 212.16 mph to edge Greg Anderson. Matt Hagan took his fourth No. 1 qualifier of the Funny Car season and Steve Torrence was No. 1 in Top Fuel.

Defending champ Zverev reaches Citi Open final

Defending champion and top seed Alexander Zverev

defeated 10th-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals of Citi Open in Washington.

Zverev will face Alex de Minaur in the final after the unseeded Aussie beat Russia’s Andrey Rublev 5-7, 7-6(8), 6-4 in the other semifinal.

Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Andrea Petkovic 6-2, 6-2 to reach the women’s final.

Serena Williams out of Montreal tournament

Serena Williams pulled out of next week’s Rogers Cup hard-court tournament in Montreal, citing personal reasons.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is coming off the most lopsided defeat of her career, a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Johanna Konta in San Jose, California, on Tuesday.
