Indians get win, but Bauer hit by liner, leaves game

-

Indians 3, White Sox 1 Indians starter Trevor Bauer delivers a pitch against the White Sox in the first inning. He picked up his 12th victory but left the game in the seventh inning after being hit on the right leg by a line drive.

in 6 innings. But he allowed a full-count, solo homer to Yoan Moncada in the third, and for a while that's how the score stayed. After the Indians were shut out 1-0 on Friday, it was not an encouraging sign.

But help arrived from an unexpected source.

Catcher Roberto Perez singled with two out in the fifth against James Shields (4-14). Then he knocked the baseball world on its ear by stealing the first base of his career. He continued to third on a throwing error by catcher Omar Narvaez.

Rookie Greg Allen followed with single to

center to tie the score at 1.

The Indians made it a 3-1 game in much more familiar fashion. Michael Brantley and Jose Ramirez started the sixth inning with consecutive homers off Shields.

It was Brantley's 13th homer and Ramirez's 34th.

As productive as Brantley and Ramirez have been, they have not been heard from for a while in terms of the long ball. It was Brantley's first homer since July 15, just before the All-Star break. It was Ramirez's first homer since Aug. 5.

Brad Hand relieved

Bauer, but walked the first two batters he faced before finding his groove. He ended the inning by striking out Narvaez and Tim Anderson. Then he retired the side in order in the eighth.

Cody Allen pitched the ninth for his 22nd save, but it was not without drama. He gave up a leadoff single to Yolmer Sanchez, but Daniel Palka — who ended Friday's game with a walk-off homer in the ninth — sent a screamer to the fence in center that Greg Allen tracked down.

Cody Allen ended it by striking out Avisail Garcia for his first save since July 31st.
