Roethlisberger may have suffered concussion

- From wire reports

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger suffered a possible concussion after being hit at practice Tuesday.

"Ben Roethlisberger sustained a hit today in practice," coach Mike Tomlin said through a team spokesman. "He is being evaluated as part of the concussion protocol."

Roethlisberger went face first to the turf and was surrounded by teammates after throwing a touchdown to JuJu Smith-Schuster during a competitive 2point conversion drill between the offense and defense.

He was helped to his feet and sat on a water cooler with a towel over his head as practice continued. He touched his head several times and eventually walked off the field under his own power with trainers and team doctors.

Right guard Marcus Gilbert said Roethlisberger rolled Concussion or not, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger isn’t going to play in Thursday’s exhibition game at Green Bay.

out and ran into him as he blocked linebacker Keion Adams.

"It didn't look too pretty," Gilbert said. "But when he got up he seemed to be a little bit better. That's my guy. I wouldn't want to see anything happen to him, especially in a practice like this."

Center Maurkice Pouncey was optimistic about Roethlisberger's injury.

"No one really saw it, but I think he hit his head," Pouncey said. "We were all in a nervous situation, but he got up fine, he looked totally good, and he walked off the field."

The Steelers plan to get a closer look at their two most recent draft picks at quarterback. Rookie third-round pick Mason Rudolph and Josh Dobbs, Pittsburgh's fourth-round selection in 2017, will see all of the playing time when the Steelers visit Green Bay on Thursday for an exhibition game. Roethlisberger will not play.

Free-agent receiver Dez Bryant is ready for some face time with the Cleveland Browns.

Bryant is scheduled to visit the Browns on Thursday. The Browns need help at receiver, especially because they don’t know when former All-Pro selection Josh Gordon will return to the team. He remains absent from training camp after announcing July 23 that he would focus on his health and treatment plan away from the club.

But coach Hue Jackson continued to stress Tuesday that the Browns won’t attempt to sign Bryant unless they determine he’ll be a good fit.

“It’s not just a given,” Jackson said. “I think you have to work through whatever conversations we have and feel good about it.”

Bryant, 29, reportedly rejected a three-year, $21 million offer from the Baltimore Ravens earlier this offseason.

Carson Wentz expects to participate in 11-on-11 drills next week, but it's uncertain whether he'll be ready for Philadelphia’s season opener Sept. 6 against Atlanta. Wentz's goal since having surgery in December to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee has been to be ready for that game. "It's no secret that it's going to be close," Wentz said. … Free-agent defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins from Ohio State will work out for the Browns on Wednesday, the Akron Beacon Journal reported. The Browns have Trevon Coley out because of a high-ankle sprain suffered two weeks ago. Backup Caleb Brantley suffered an ankle injury Sunday.
