Justin Verlander struck out 11 in seven solid innings and the Houston Astros extended their AL West edge, topping the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 Sunday in Houston.

The Astros lead Oakland by 4 games in the division race. Arizona began the day four games behind in the NL West and 3 games back for the second NL wild-card spot.

Verlander (16-9) allowed one run on three hits. He matched his career high for strikeouts in a season with 269 — he passed teammate Gerrit Cole, who has 260, for most in the AL.

METS 4, RED SOX 3: Boston right fielder Mookie Betts left the game after hurting his left side making a throw to home plate during a win over New York that cut Boston’s magic number to two for a third straight AL East title. BLUE JAYS 3, YANKEES 2: Dellin Betances wasted a 2-1 eighthinning lead, allowing hits to four of his first five batters. Pinch-hitter Rowdy Tellez had a tying single and Randal Grichuk a go-ahead double. Betances (4-6) has lost in two of his past three appearances. NATIONALS 6, BRAVES 4: Bryce Harper and Anthony Rendon hit two-run homers off Sean Newcomb (12-9) and 19-year-old rookie Juan Soto added an RBI single. RAYS 5, ATHLETICS 4: Khris Davis hit a grand slam in the ninth off Sergio Romo, his major league-leading 43rd homer, in a losing effort.
