Ad Watch: Cordray hits DeWine over health care

- Randy Ludlow The Columbus Dispatch

“Carol,” a 30-second TV commercial from the gubernatorial campaign of Democrat Richard Cordray.

THE AD:

WHERE TO SEE IT: Broadcast and cable TV statewide. The campaign did not disclose the cost of the buy.

IMAGES: Hilliard resident Carol Sessoms speaks during the commercial, which is interspersed with photos of her family. It also features images of Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike DeWine.

SCRIPT: (Carol Sessoms narrating) “I lost my husband, and my son was diagnosed with the same genetic disorder. If insurance companies do not have to pay for pre-existing conditions, my son will not get the blood thinners he needs. There’s plenty of people that just cannot survive without their medications. When I heard Mike DeWine wanted to allow insurance companies to refuse to pay for pre-existing conditions, it made me sick to my stomach. I don’t want Mike DeWine to have that power.”

ANALYSIS: As in an earlier ad, the Cordray campaign continues its bid to employ afflicted Ohioans to make DeWine appear callous to their health care insurance needs and worries of millions with pre-existing conditions. DeWine says he always has been supportive of guaranteed insurance coverage for chronic illnesses and conditions, but he teamed with other Republican attorneys general in 2011 in going to court in a futile bid to overturn the Affordable Care Act, which requires insurers to cover pre-existing conditions. DeWine has declined to join an effort by Democratic attorneys general in a Texas lawsuit to save the mandate of coverage. DeWine has not detailed how to ensure ongoing coverage for pre-existing conditions if Obamacare is overturned in the courts.
