January’s running helps Hartley hold off Hoover

Jalan January had 27 carries for 269 yards and four touchdowns, and host Hartley outlasted North Canton Hoover 45-38 in a nonleague game Friday night.

January opened the game with the first two scores, covering 1 and 51 yards, and a third from 70 yards out to give the Hawks (7-2) a 28-7 secondquar­ter lead.

Adam Griguolo and Connor Ashby each ran for two touchdowns to help cut Hoover’s deficit to 37-35 with 3:30 left in the game before January scored on a 1-yard plunge with 1:21 remaining to give the Hawks a 45-35 lead.

Quarterbac­k Miles Flemming added 105 yards rushing with a TD and threw for another as Hartley totaled 405 yards on the ground and 498 overall against Hoover (6-3).

WALNUT RIDGE 35, MARIONFRAN­KLIN 28: Isaiah Murphy hit Qian Magwood for a 5-yard touchdown pass with 44 seconds remaining, and host Walnut Ridge (8-1, 5-1) posted a City League South Division win over Marion-Franklin (6-3, 4-2). Magwood also had an intercepti­on in the end zone for a touchback with five minutes left before the Scots’ game-winning drive.

NORTHLAND 14, EAST 0: Kalil Branham threw two firstquart­er touchdown passes, and Northland (7-2, 5-0) beat host East (3-6, 2-3) in the City North despite being outgained 220-169 in total yards. Walnut Ridge’s Jamarius Dinkins tries to take down Marion-Franklin’s Angelo Summerall by the jersey. INDEPENDEN­CE 42, SOUTH 0: Kealin Hardin rumbled for 229 yards and two touchdowns, and Independen­ce (5-4, 4-2) defeated host South (6-3, 3-3) in the City South. The 76ers gained 313 yards rushing and 381 total while limiting South to 31 overall.

WHITEHALL 49, READY 14: Raymell Byrd’s 174 yards rushing and two second-half touchdown runs helped visiting Whitehall (8-1) pull away from Ready (3-6) in a nonleague game. Juvaun Blackshear’s 72-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half tied the score at 14 before Byrd’s consecutiv­e TD runs gave the Rams a 29-14 lead.

GROVEPORT 28, BIG WALNUT 19: Jalil Underdown ran for 169 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries, and visiting Groveport (5-4, 3-1) produced a touchdown and extra point in each quarter to secure an Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division victory over Big Walnut (3-6, 2-2). Emmanuel Anthony added 155 yards rushing for the Cruisers, who led 14-12 at halftime. Nathan Lawyer had two touchdown runs for Big Walnut.

HILLIARD BRADLEY 48, WORTHINGTO­N KILBOURNE 10: Jack Richards set the tone with two first-quarter touchdowns and 73 yards rushing, and Evan Yee added two second-half TDs and 97 yards to lead visiting

Hilliard Bradley (8-1, 6-0) over Worthingto­n Kilbourne (1-8, 1-5) in the OCC Cardinal. Bradley quarterbac­k Griffin Veil threw for 264 yards and two scores, both in the second quarter, to help give the Jaguars a 35-3 halftime lead.

UPPER ARLINGTON 24, CENTRAL CROSSING 7: Eli D’Herete had 88 yards rushing and a score, and Chris Schweistha­l ran for 84 yards and a score to pace Upper Arlington (5-4, 3-1) to an OCC Central win over visiting Central Crossing (4-5, 1-3).

COLUMBUS ACADEMY 47, LIBERTY UNION 7: Brady Hess threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns, and Columbus Academy (5-4, 2-2) dominated visiting Liberty Union (1-8, 1-4) in the Mid-State League Ohio Division. Hess’ night was highlighte­d by a 90-yard TD pass to Jordan Hardiman and a 72-yarder to Dorrian Moultrie. Moultrie finished with 170 yards on six receptions with two TDs. Sam Messick added four field goals for the Vikings.

GRANDVIEW 41, LOGAN ELM 29: Neither Grandview (7-2) or host Logan Elm (1-8) gained more than 284 yards of offense, but QB Kyle Casey hooked up with Luke Lachey for three touchdowns, and the Bobcats prevailed in a nonleague game. Logan Elm QB Connor Robinson also threw three TD passes, including two in the fourth quarter.

GRANVILLE 38, LICKING VALLEY 14: Cameron Crouch threw for 173 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 176 yards and two scores to lead visiting Granville (8-1, 3-0) over Licking Valley (6-3, 2-1) in the Licking County League Buckeye Division. Chase Whisner had 112 passing yards and 102 yards rushing and two scores for Licking Valley.

JOHNSTOWN 21, LICKING HEIGHTS 7: Bryce Barasch ran for 178 yards and a score, Caden Calhoun added 141 and two TDs, and Johnstown (8-1) quashed a fast start by Licking Heights (6-3) in a nonleague game. Hornets quarterbac­k Jacob Righter ran for 116 yards and scored on his team’s opening possession from 16 yards before Johnstown responded with 21 unanswered points.
