Browns’ Landry frustrated by decline in production

- By Nate Ulrich

The Browns’ Jarvis Landry had two receptions against the Chargers last week and has just 11 in the past three games.

Landry had just two catches on nine targets for 11 yards.

Landry said he usually doesn’t pay attention to his statistics, but now he can’t go on social media without someone heckling him about them.

“I’ve just kind turned it off, but that’s what I’ve got to do,” he said. “There’s a bigger picture. What we’re trying to accomplish, that stuff doesn’t matter.”

Defenses often doubleteam him on third down, the money down for him throughout his first four NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins.

Rookies Antonio Callaway and Damion Ratley haven’t demanded extra attention from opponents.

Rashard Higgins has come closest to posing a consistent threat, but he’s been out with a sprained knee since the 12-9 overtime win over the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 7.

“If you’re a defensive coordinator and if there’s one guy to stop and you just stop that one guy, your chances go up of winning the game, so why not try to stop that one guy and just see who else can beat you?” Landry said. “So everybody’s going to have to make plays. The running game’s going to have to get going, and we’re going to have to be creative as an offense to find ways to give me one-on-one matchups, and I’ve got to win those.”

Offensive coordinator Todd Haley said he’s had a lot of good conversations with Landry in an effort to keep the player’s head in the game.

“As frustrating as some things may be — the things that he can’t control — he’s got to continue to be a leader for us and go out and take every snap as if it’s the most important play of the game — because it could be — and be ready for his opportunities and maximize those opportunities,” Haley said. “He didn’t do it (against the Chargers), but nobody else did it, either, including us as coaches.”
