“They’re going to tell you that someone with a learning disability is never going to go to college, but you’re gonna prove them wrong.”

Democrat Rob Richardson has launched the first television ad in the race for state treasurer.

The 30-second spot is “a note to my younger self” narrated by Richardson, a securities lawyer from Cincinnati.

“They’re going to tell you that someone with a learning disability is never going to go to college, but you’re gonna prove them wrong,” Richardson says, speaking directly to viewers.

“You’ll become an engineer, a lawyer, and chair the University of Cincinnati. You’re not going to let yourself be limited by others.”

Pictures and videos of Richardson as a youth and in his various work experiences are also shown.

In the second half of the ad, Richardson and, later, a female narrator talk about what he’ll do if elected.

“I’m not going to allow the powerful to limit Ohioans,” he says.

“Look, I know what it’s like to be counted out; Richardson that’s why as treasurer I’m going to make sure all Ohioans are counted in,” Richardson says.

Richardson faces Republican Robert Sprague, a state representative from Findlay, to succeed Republican Josh Mandel, who is term-limited.

The commercial is airing in the Columbus and Cleveland television markets.
