A Denison University student was found dead from an apparent suicide Wednesday afternoon in woods near the university, about 90 minutes after a search was launched of the campus and surrounding Granville community in Licking County, Granville police said.

Sean Bonner, a member of the class of 2020, had been last seen alive by his roommates at midday and was reported missing at 3:32 p.m., according to university and Granville police.

Denison University President Adam Weinberg, who was out of town, sent an email to the campus community Wednesday evening announcing Bonner’s death. Weinberg canceled Thursday classes and Swasey Chapel was opened at 7 p.m. Wednesday to allow the students and community to gather. Professional staff and clergy also were on hand.

“We are all incredibly saddened by Sean’s tragic death,” Weinberg wrote. “He was a bright, active and engaged person. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sean’s family and friends.”
