Former Cardinal Health CEO George Barrett has been elected to Target Corp.’s board of directors, Target announced Wednesday, the day Barrett ceded the chairman title at Cardinal Health.

“George brings to Target’s board a wealth of experience at the helm of global organizations in a complex industry that’s weathered almost constant change,” said Brian Cornell, chairman and CEO of Minneapolisbased Target, in a statement.

Barrett, 63, hinted in a phone interview that he will have other new ventures to discuss soon as he moves on from Cardinal.

“There are a number of things I’m considering. I’m trying to be really selective about next steps,” Barrett said. “This opportunity to serve on Target’s board was not a hard one for me; I’ve been an admirer of Target for a long time. It’s a unique company with a great brand.”

Barrett served as chairman and CEO of Cardinal from 2009 to the end of 2017. He was succeeded as CEO of Cardinal by Mike Kaufmann in January, retaining the chairman title until Cardinal’s annual meeting on Wednesday. Barrett
