Veterans Day is filled with events

Veterans Day is Sunday, and observed on Monday this year. Several events are planned in and around central Ohio over several days. Events are on Sunday unless otherwise noted:

• Columbus: Noon MILVETS parade on Friday, starting at North High Street and Nationwide Boulevard, traveling south on High Street and turning west onto Broad Street. This year, the parade honors the 100th anniversar­y of the end of World War I and the founding of the American Legion.

• Delaware: 3 p.m. parade starting at Ohio Wesleyan University, near Wilmer Street, through the city and to the county fairground­s on Pennsylvan­ia Avenue, with ceremony to follow.

• Dublin: 11 a.m. ceremony Monday, in Veterans Park, 77. N. High St., with keynote address by Maj. Gen. Gregory L. Wayt.

• Gahanna: 11 a.m. ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park, 73 W. Johnstown Road.

• Grove City: 11 a.m. service at Grove City Museum, 3378 Park St.

• Hilliard: 2 p.m. parade starting at the Franklin County Fairground­s, 5035 Northwest Parkway, to Veterans Memorial at Roger Reynolds Municipal Park, where a short ceremony will be held with keynote by retired Marine Sgt. Maj. George Mussi. A free (donations welcome for the American Legion’s “Gifts for Yanks” program) bean and cornbread dinner will be served at the Hilliard United Methodist Church, 5445 Scioto Darby Road, from 3 to 6 p.m.

• Johnstown: 11 a.m. parade Saturday from Johnstown High School, 445 S. Main St., to American Legion Post 254, with lunch following.

• Marysville: 2 p.m., Voices from the Stone program at Union County Veterans Memorial at the Union County Courthouse.

• Pleasant Township (Perry County): Noon rededicati­on of WWII monument, located on Route 13 (across from the post office in Moxahala), with guest speaker retired Maj. Gen. David Hartley.

• Powell: 11 a.m. ceremony Monday at the Greater Powell Veterans Memorial in Village Green Park, 47 Hall St., with a free luncheon to follow in the municipal building’s east room for veterans and military personnel as well as their family and friends. (In case of bad weather, the ceremony will be in the city council chambers.)

• Westervill­e: 8:30 a.m. Friday, free pancake breakfast for veterans ($5 for everyone else), Westervill­e Community Center, 350 N. Cleveland Ave. To register in advance, visit the front desk or the senior center at 310 W. Main St.

• Westervill­e: 7 p.m. free concert at Church of the Messiah United Methodist Church, 51 N. State St., featuring Messiah Big Band, adult Chancel Choir and children’s Rainbow and Altar Choirs. Special guests include Westervill­e’s community chorus, The Silvertone­s, and bagpipers Aladdin Pipes & Drums. A free-will offering will benefit Honor Flight Columbus.

• Whitehall: Noon parade Saturday from Etna Elementary School, 4531 Etna Road, to the high school.
