No. 8 Auburn makes Duke sweat

R.J. Barrett and Cam Reddish scored 18 points each as topranked Duke survived its stiffest challenge of the season, holding off No. 8 Auburn 78-72 on Tuesday night to reach the Maui Invitation­al title game.

The Blue Devils (5-0) got off to another stellar start, but the Tigers (4-1) clawed back, trimming a 17-point deficit to 61-56 in the second half. But every time Auburn tried to get closer, the Blue Devils answered with an alley-oop dunk or step-back jumper.

NO. 16 CLEMSON 65, GEORGIA 49: Marcquise Reed scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Elijah Thomas earned his second-straight doubledoub­le as Clemson (5-0) advanced to the championsh­ip game of the Cayman Islands Classic. Derek Ogbeide led Georgia (3-2) with 11 points. LIPSCOMB 73, NO. 18 TCU 64: Garrison Mathews had 23 points, Kenny Cooper added 17 that included a couple of breakaway layups off steals. and visiting Lipscomb (4-1) held on for the program's first win over a Top 25 team. Alex Robinson had 17 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for TCU (3-1). INDIANA 78, TEXASARLIN­GTON 64: Juwan Morgan scored 23 points and 10 rebounds while Romeo Langford added 16 points and eight rebounds to help Indiana (4-1) pull away late for the home victory. The ugly game turned out to be closer than expected largely because of a combinatio­n of Indiana miscues and the Mavericks' second-half shooting. Edric Dennis had 19 points and Brian Warren, in a return to his home state, scored 14 for the Mavericks (3-2). IOWA STATE 84, ILLINOIS 68: Talen Horton-Tucker had 26 points and 14 rebounds while Michael Jacobson added 23 points, and Iowa State (4-1) ran away from Illinois in the second half in the Maui Invitation­al. Trent Frazier had 15 points to lead Illinois (1-3). SAN DIEGO STATE 79, XAVIER 74: Jalen McDaniels scored 25 points, Devin Watson added 21 and San Diego State held off Xavier in the Maui Invitation­al. San Diego State (3-1) fell behind by 19 early but answered with a 19-3 run to pull within three by halftime and had an early 16-2 run in the second half to go up 58-49. Quentin Goodin led Xavier (2-3) with 20 points. ILLINOIS STATE 73, AKRON 68: Josh Jefferson made four 3-pointers and scored 19 points, and Phil Fayne contribute­d 18 points and nine rebounds for Illinois State (3-2) in the Cayman Islands Classic. Jimond Ivey had 16 points and eight rebounds for Akron (3-2), which shot just 17.1 percent from three-point range (7 of 41). Memphis' Hardaway: lands No. 1 recruit: James Wiseman, a 7-foot center who is the No. 1 recruit in the nation in the 2019 class, chose Memphis and his former high school and AAU coach, Penny Hardaway, over Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Kansas and Florida State on Tuesday, announcing his decision on ESPN. Wiseman averaged 17 points and nine rebounds last season in leading Hardaway-coached East High in Memphis to Tennessee's Class AAA championsh­ip.
