University takes food for your parking fine

Some people issued parking tickets from Northern Michigan University can keep cash in their pocket if they donate items to the school’s food pantry.

Donations of a variety of items can reduce or eliminate a fine of up to $25, although no ramen noodles, please. The value of items is determined at drop-off, but the Marquette campus offers options in categories ranging from $5 to $25.

The next donation date is Tuesday, which coincides with the National Day of Giving. Tickets written since Aug. 1 are eligible. The Food 4 Fines program is similar to efforts elsewhere connected to parking or library fines.

Ferry strikes dock twice; Coast Guard investigat­ing

The Coast Guard is investigat­ing what caused a ferry boat to crash twice into docks at San Francisco’s famed Ferry Building, slightly injuring two people aboard on Friday.

Coast Guard spokesman Chris Shih said investigat­ors are looking into mechanical issues and other factors.

A Golden Gate Ferry spokeswoma­n says the boat was traveling from Larkspur and carrying 53 passengers when it struck an outer berth before bumping into another dock. The vessel’s hull was damaged when it struck the

concrete promenade and knocked a guardrail.

Official says Russia will verify moon landings

The head of Russia’s Roscosmos space agency said in a video posted Saturday on Twitter that a proposed Russian mission to the moon will be tasked with verifying that the American moon landings were real, though he appeared to be making a joke.

“We have set this objective to fly and verify whether they’ve been there or not,” said Dmitry Rogozin. He was responding to a question about whether NASA actually landed on the moon nearly 50 years ago. He appeared to be joking, as he smirked and shrugged while answering. But conspiraci­es surroundin­g NASA’s moon missions are common in Russia.

Boko Haram kidnapped 18 girls, official says

Eighteen girls were kidnapped early Saturday from two different villages by suspected Boko Haram militants, a regional deputy in Niger said.

Lamido Harouna Moumouni said 24 attackers abducted 15 girls in the village of Blaharde and three other girls in the village of Bague. They are not far from where extremists killed at least seven people at a French drilling company’s site Wednesday, and near Nigeria’s border.

Moumouni asked the government to do “everything possible to secure this population, including through dialogue with Boko Haram,” saying people will leave.

Nuns urge sisters to tell police about sex abuse

The Catholic Church’s global organizati­on of nuns has denounced the “culture of silence and secrecy” surroundin­g sexual abuse in the church and is urging sisters who have been abused to report the crimes to police and their superiors.

The Internatio­nal Union of Superiors General, which represents more than 500,000 sisters worldwide, vowed to help nuns who have been abused to find the courage to report it, and pledged to help victims heal and seek justice.

The statement, issued on the eve of the U.N.designated Internatio­nal Day for the Eliminatio­n of Violence Against Women, was the first from the Romebased UISG since the abuse scandal erupted anew this year and as the sexual abuse of adult nuns by clergymen has also come to light.
