Mayfield not apologizing for Jackson comments

Hue Jackson and calling him “fake.”

“I’m not a cookie-cutter quarterback, never have been, never will be. I speak my mind,” Mayfield said Wednesday as the Browns (4-6-1) prepared for Sunday’s road game at the Houston Texans (8-3). “That’s just how I am. I’m not looking for anybody’s approval. I don’t regret any of it.”

Mayfield began viewing Jackson as adversary after the Browns fired him on Oct. 29 and he joined the Cincinnati Bengals as a special assistant to head coach Marvin Lewis on Nov. 13.

Mayfield threw four touchdown passes to lead the Browns to a 35-20 win over the Bengals on Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium and explained in his postgame news conference he only briefly shook Jackson’s hand before and after the game because he “didn’t feel like talking” and had a problem with the coach quickly switching sides in the AFC North rivalry.

As for why Mayfield called Jackson “fake,” he refused to elaborate.

“There are things that happened inside the building, but there is no reason to get into detail with it,” Mayfield said.

Mayfield said that interim coach Gregg Williams hadn’t talked to him about the shots he took at Jackson.

“We’ll see if that happens down the road,” Mayfield said. “But right now, they expect me to handle things the right way and say the right things and lead this team the right way.”
