Reynoldsburg coach leads All- Ohio team
Buddy White, who guided Reynoldsburg to its winningest season, was named coach of the year on the Division I Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association All-Ohio high school football teams released Wednesday.
Not only did the Raiders (10-2) snap a 16-year losing streak to rival Pickerington Central, but they also won a share of their first Ohio Capital Conference Ohio Division championship since 1993 and earned a No. 1 regional seed for just their third playoff appearance.
White heads a team that includes 13 area players.
Honored on offense were quarterback Griffin Veil of Hilliard Bradley, receivers Jack Duffer of Hilliard Bradley and Chris Scott of Pickerington North and offensive linemen Cam Craig of Dublin Jerome and Alex Azusenis of Olentangy Liberty.
On defense, linemen Zach Harrison of Olentangy Orange and DeWayne Carter of Pickerington Central, linebackers Ethan Royer of Hilliard Davidson, Dezman Cooper of Reynoldsburg and Cannon Blauser of Hilliard Bradley, backs Camby Goff of Reynoldsburg and Terry Simuel of Pickerington Central and punter Ben Krimm of Upper Arlington.
Veil passed for 2,356 yards and 24 touchdowns in helping Bradley to a 9-1 record. Duffer had a breakout season with 46 receptions for 1,068 yards and 14 TDs.
Scott made 52 catches for 793 yards and 10 TDs.
A Purdue commit, Craig made 43 pancake blocks. Azusenis helped Liberty to a thirdconsecutive regional championship.
Harrison, a five-star prospect, totaled 41 tackles, 14 of them for a loss, and seven sacks.
Carter, a Duke commit, made 58 tackles (8 for loss), with three sacks in helping Pickerington Central to a third straight final four.
Royer made over 100 tackles for a regional finalist that allowed only 8.2 points per game. Cooper recorded 17.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. Blauser, an Ohio commit, had 106 tackles, 13 for loss.
Goff, an Air Force commit, and Simuel, a four-year starter, were key two-way players on their teams. Krimm averaged 40.1 yards per punt for his second straight All-Ohio nod.
The offensive player of the year was BereaMidpark quarterback Trevor Bycznski, a Rice commit who passed for 3,506 yards and 34 touchdowns and finished with 9,151 career passing yards.
Linebacker Ivan Pace of top-ranked, unbeaten state finalist Cincinnati Colerain won the defensive honor. He had 70 tackles, 18 for loss, 4.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. He also rushed for 900 yards and 15 TDs.
