Short North’s Julep gives old stand-bys new look
Julep is known for its variety of craft beer and cocktails, which are matched by its creative fare.
“We want to put out good, quality food,” said Dante Carter, general manager of the Short North venue. “We want our guests to come back and look forward to our food.”
Even so, no selfrespecting tavern would leave chicken wings off the menu.
Whether ordered traditional or boneless ($11), they’re battered and fried in-house and served with one of eight sauces.
Among the customer favorites are the slider lollipops ($9), which are essentially mini burgers with a choice of cheese and stuck with a skewer, with a pickle on the side.
Fried mozzarella sticks ($7) are cut from a cheese block and breaded twice to create a relatively light but crunchy texture, Carter said. They’re served with a housemade red pepper marinara sauce.

between steak and curly fries. They’re topped with bacon, scallions, tomatoes and blue-cheese crumbles, plus avocado ranch sauce.
Vegans have a couple of options, such as the chipotle barbecue jackfruit sandwich ($9). The shredded jackfruit, which many believe has a similar consistency as pulled pork, is covered with pineapple-poppyseed slaw, with fries on the side.
Another choice for vegetarians is the redbeet hummus ($7), featuring house-made hummus blended with beets for a striking bright-red color, Carter said. It is plated with seasonal vegetables and pita chips.
