UC gets 'payback' at home vs. Xavier

After getting drubbed on Xavier's home court last season, the Bearcats had extra motivation in a crosstown rivalry already packed with emotions. From start to finish, Cincinnati's defense dominated.

Jarron Cumberland scored 19 points, and Cincinnati used its front-line advantage to shut down Xavier's inside game and beat the Musketeers 62-47 on Saturday.

The Bearcats (9-1) have won only twice in the last six games against their nearby rival, both times on their home court. Last year, the Musketeers had their way in an 89-76 win at Xavier.

"A revenge-type game," said Cincinnati's Keith Williams, who had 16 points. "It was payback today."

Cincinnati got its biggest win in its renovated arena, which reopened for this season.

Quentin Goodin scored 12 points for Xavier (6-4), which was held to its lowest point total since a 51-47 loss to Tennessee on Dec. 29, 2012. Leading scorer Naji Marshall was 2-of13 shooting, including 1 of 8 from beyond the arc, and finished with eight points.

NO. 8 AUBURN 82, DAYTON 72: Bryce Brown scored a career-high 34 points and made six three-pointers to lead host Auburn (8-1) over Dayton (5-4). Ryan Mikesell led Dayton with 15 points.

OHIO 78, RADFORD 69: points and Teyvion Kirk scored 17 to lead host Ohio (6-3) over Radford (6-3). Doug Taylor grabbed 16 rebounds for the Bobcats and Ben Vander Plas scored 14 points. Ohio led 32-26 at halftime after shooting 54 percent from the field. The Bobcats finished at 51 percent with a 46-22 scoring advantage in the paint.

TOLEDO 75, MARSHALL 74, OT: Marreon Jackson scored with 3 seconds left in overtime and Toledo (9-1), which blew a 20-point second-half lead, defeated host Marshall (5-3). Toledo, winner of seven straight, was led by Jaelan Sanford's 20 points. Jackson scored 13 and Willie Jackson added 12 points and nine rebounds.

CAPITAL 79, OHIO NORTHERN 53: Austin Schreck scored 24 points to surpass 1,000 for his career, leading host Capital (5-2, 3-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) past Ohio Northern (3-5, 0-3). Joey Weingartne­r had 16 points and Caleb Cox pulled down 17 rebounds for the Crusaders, who led 40-20 at halftime. HEIDELBERG 87, OTTERBEIN 76: Host Heidelberg (1-4, 1-1 OAC) closed the game with a 12-4 run to put away Otterbein (2-6, 0-3). Maurice Beavers led Otterbein with 16 points. OHIO DOMINICAN 83, LAKE ERIE 78: Matt King scored 19 points and host Ohio Dominican (6-3, 2-1 Great Midwest Athletic Conference) held off Lake Erie (6-4, 3-1). Lake Erie closed to 79-77 with 38 seconds left, but Hasan Varence hit a basket to give the Panthers breathing room.
