Garza’s 22 points help Iowa defeat Penn State

Luka Garza matched a season-high 22 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds and No. 23 Iowa edged Penn State 89-82 on Wednesday night in State College, Pennsylvan­ia.

Jordan Bohannon added 19 points, Ryan Kriener had 15 off the bench for the Hawkeyes (15-3, 4-3 Big Ten), who won their fourth straight and ninth of 10.

Josh Reaves and Rasir Bolton scored 16 points apiece for the Nittany Lions (7-11, 0-7), who led for most of the second half but lost their fifth straight.

Mike Watkins chipped in 11 points and 11 rebounds and Myles Dread scored 14 points for Penn State which scored the first eight points and led 45-40 at halftime.

After the teams swapped the lead five times in the final six minutes, Garza put Iowa ahead for good with a free throw that made it 83-82 with 1:36 to play. Bohannon added a 3-pointer moments later to put the game out of reach.

IOWA STATE 68, NO. 8 TEXAS TECH 64: Marial Shayok scored 20 points, Nick Weiler-babb made a late layup to give Iowa State the lead and the Cyclones (13-4, 3-2 Big 12) beat Texas Tech (15-2, 4-1) in Lubbock, Texas.

KANSAS STATE 74, NO. 20 OKLAHOMA 61: Barry Brown scored 25 points and Dean Wade added 20 to help Kansas State (13-4, 3-2 Big 12) beat Oklahoma (13-4, 2-3) in Norman, Oklahoma. Christian James scored 20 points and Rashard Odomes added a season-high 17 for Oklahoma.

TULSA 89, CONNECTICU­T 83:

Jeriah Horne scored a careerhigh 27 points and Tulsa (12-6, 2-3 American) held off Uconn (10-8, 1-4) in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tulsa coach Frank Haith and Uconn coach Dan Hurley were both ejected with 11:40 to play and Tulsa leading 61-47. Haith protested a foul call against his forward Daquan Jeffries and Hurley began yelling at Haith. The two exchanged words and officials assessed both two technical fouls before play resumed.

HEIDELBERG 63, CAPITAL 62:

Myron Prewitt scored 14 points and made a game-winning threepoint play with three seconds left to lift host Heidelberg (6-10, 4-5) over Capital (13-3, 8-1) in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Prewitt was fouled while making the tying layup, then hit the free throw to put Heidelberg ahead 63-62. OTTERBEIN 92, OHIO NORTHERN 78: Maurice Beavers scored 21 points and Jay Joseph added 18, and Otterbein (5-11, 2-7) used a big second half to roll past visiting Ohio Northern (4-12, 0-9) in the OAC. The Cardinals, who had six players reach double figures, outscored the Polar Bears 50-35 after trailing 43-42 at halftime. Daniel Donner had 23 points for Ohio Northern. WITTENBERG 98, OHIO WESLEYAN 94, OT: Jake Bertemes scored 22 points and visiting Wittenberg (12-4, 6-3) took control by scoring the first six points of overtime in defeating Ohio Wesleyan (8-8, 3-6) in the North Coast Athletic Conference. James Johnson, who had 21 points for the Tigers, made two free throws with no time left in regulation to tie the score at 82 and force OT. Gabe Johnson led OWU with 22 points.

WOOSTER 92, DENISON 59: Danyon Hempy scored 23 points and Wooster (13-3, 8-1) pulled away from a 11-point halftime lead to rout Denison (5-10, 2-7) in the NCAC. Matt Doyle led the Big Red with 11 points.

OKLAHOMA STATE KICKS THREE OFF TEAM: Oklahoma State kicked guard Michael Weathers and forwards Maurice Calloo and Kentreviou­s Jones off the team due to a violation of rules. Oklahoma State (8-9, 2-3 Big 12) has been riddled with problems all year. The moves leave the Cowboys with nine available players on their roster. Weathers, who had transferre­d from Miami University was the Mid-american Conference Freshman of the Year in 201617 after averaging 16.7 points per game. NO. 1 NOTRE DAME 80, VIRGINIA TECH 51: Jessica Shepard had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Notre Dame (17-1, 5-0 ACC) took command with a 24-1 run in the second quarter to beat Virginia Tech (13-4, 0-4) in Blacksburg, Virginia.

WEST VIRGINIA 73, NO. 18 IOWA STATE 64: Lucky Rudd and Tynice Martin combined for 42 points, 16 in the fourth quarter when they made 12 of 14 free throws, and West Virginia (12-4, 3-2 Big 12) pulled away from Iowa State (13-4, 2-3) in Morgantown, West Virginia.

NO. 20 RUTGERS 65, PURDUE 63, OT: Stasha Carey made three free throws in the final nine seconds of overtime as Rutgers (14-3, 6-0 Big Ten) survived blowing a 14-point late in regulation to beat Purdue (13-6, 4-2) in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

NORTHWESTE­RN 75, NO. 25 INDIANA 69: Lindsey Pulliam scored a season-high 27 points and Northweste­rn (10-7, 3-3) defeated Indiana (15-3, 4-2) in Bloomingto­n, Indiana.
