Institute to be named for Abigail Wexner
Nationwide Children’s Hospital announced plans Friday to rededicate its research institute as the Abigail Wexner Research Institute.
Wexner, a local philanthropist and the wife of L Brands Founder Leslie H. Wexner, has served on the hospital’s board of directors for 25 years. During her tenure as board chairwoman from 2005 to 2012, she helped lead the hospital through the largest expansion in its 127-year history, officials said.
She has worked closely with Dr. Steve Allen, the hospital’s CEO, who has said he intends to retire in June after nearly 13 years as head of the growing organization.
The hospital also announced Friday that it is establishing the Allen Distinguished Scholar in Pediatric Research, a designation and $100,000 award to be given to a senior researcher.
“More than a decade ago, Nationwide Children’s put forth a bold plan to transform this hospital from a strong regional institution into a national leader in pediatric health care and research,” Alex Fischer, chairman of the hospital board, said in a news release. “Our success has been possible because of the passion and vision of these individuals, together with our dedicated board and talented leadership team.”
The official rededication of the research institute is set for May. Mrs. Wexner intends to continue serving on the board. Wexner
