Illinois trips No. 9 Michigan State

Ayo Dosunmu scored 24 points and Illinois used a swarming defense to upset No. 9 Michigan State 79-74 on Monday night in Champaign, Illlinois.

Giorgi Bezhanishv­ili scored 16 for Illinois (8-15, 4-9 Big Ten), and Trent Frazier added 15 as the Illini handed the Spartans (18-5, 9-3) their third straight loss.

Cassius Winston led the Spartans with 21 points. Xavier Tillman added 16.

Illinois led for all but a three-minute stretch late in the game, pushing ahead by as many as 14 points before Michigan State took a 64-63 lead on Kenny Goins' three-pointer with 6:21 remaining.

But Illinois took a 71-68 lead on Dosunmu's three with 2:35 left. Dosunmu made anotherthr­ee with 1:57 remaining, and the Illini held on from there as the Spartans missed their last four field-goal attempts.

NO. 2 DUKE 80, BOSTON COLLEGE 55: Freshman Cameron Reddish scored 24 points, and host Duke (20-2, 8-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) pulled away to beat Boston College (11-10, 2-7). Zion Williamson had 16 points and 17 rebounds, RJ Barrett finished with 19 points and Tre Jones added 11 points for the Blue Devils. They overcame some shaky early shooting by shooting 63 percent after halftime to claim their sixth straight win. They will be no worse than tied for first in the league when they visit No. 3 Virginia on Saturday.

NO. 5 KENTUCKY 76, SOUTH CAROLINA 48: PJ Washington scored 20 points and host Kentucky (19-3, 8-1 Southeaste­rn Conference) routed South Carolina (11-11, 6-3) for its ninth consecutiv­e victory. NO. 7 MICHIGAN 77, RUTGERS 65: Freshman Ignas Brazdeikis scored 23 points and Michigan (21-2, 10-2 Big Ten) hit nine of its first 11 shots in opening a big lead and beating host Rutgers (11-11, 4-8). Zavier Simpson added 14 points, seven assists and seven rebounds for the Wolverines.

NO. 8 NORTH CAROLINA 113, N.C. STATE 96: Luke Maye scored a seasonhigh 31 points to go with 12 rebounds, and host North Carolina (18-4, 8-1 ACC) beat North Carolina State (16-7, 4-6). The Tar Heels swept the regularsea­son series for the 12th time in 16 seasons under coach Roy Williams.

BOWLING GREEN 85, WESTERN MICHIGAN 72: Antwon Lillard scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Bowling Green (16-6, 8-1) beat host Western Michigan (6-16, 0-9) to remain atop the Midamerica­n Conference East standings. Dylan Frye added 20 points with four threes for the Falcons, who have their first 8-1 start in MAC play since the 1961-62 season. Demajeo Wiggins scored 15 points with 10 rebounds and Michael Laster had seven assists.

TOLEDO 63, AKRON

52: Jaelan Sanford scored six of his 17 points in the final three minutes to help host Toledo (19-4, 7-3 MAC) pull away from (13-9, 5-4).

KENT STATE 70, MIAMI 67: Jaylin Walker sank four free throws in the final 22 seconds and finished with 27 points, and host Kent State (17-5, 6-3 MAC) held off Miami University (12-11, 4-6). Walker made 13 of 14 free throws and added nine rebounds for the Golden Flashes in a game where the final 15 points came on free throws.
