Marchessau­lt, Golden Knights hold off Red Wings

Jonathan Marchessau­lt scored twice in a three-goal second period for Vegas, and the Golden Knights beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 on Thursday night in Detroit.

William Karlsson and Brayden Mcnabb also scored to help Vegas snap Detroit’s three-game winning streak. Gustav Nyquist, Michael Rasmussen and Thomas Vanek scored for the Red Wings.

Vegas snapped a fourgame losing streak with a shootout win over Nhlleading Tampa Bay on Tuesday night, and now the Golden Knights have backto-back wins to their credit.

Dylan Larkin returned for the Red Wings after missing a game with an oblique injury, and he had two assists, including a secondary one on the game’s first goal. Justin Abdelkader’s backhander in the first period was stopped by Marc-andre Fleury, but the goalie left the puck loose behind him, and Nyquist converted for his 13th goal of the season.

Marchessau­lt tied it in the second when he knocked in a rebound on the power play, then Karlsson put the Golden Knights ahead immediatel­y after the end of a Detroit man advantage. Paul Stastny came out of the penalty box just in time to create a 2-on-1 with Karlsson. The puck went from Karlsson to Stastny and back to Karlsson, who took the return pass and easily stuffed it into an open net.

Marchessau­lt’s 19th goal of the season came on another rebound to make it 3-1.

Rasmussen pulled Detroit within one when he had space in front of the net on a power play and beat Fleury with 15:19 remaining in the third, but the Golden Knights picked up an insurance goal with 8:53 to play. Mcnabb flipped a backhander toward the net, and it appeared to take a deflection before slipping past Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard. Oscar Lindberg was creating traffic in front for Vegas, but the goal was credited to Mcnabb.

Vanek’s goal came with 2.7 seconds left in the game. ISLANDERS 1, DEVILS 0, SO:

Josh Bailey scored in the fourth round of the shootout, Thomas Greiss made 30 saves and New York beat New Jersey to sweep the four-game season series. Mathew Barzal scored in regulation to help New York win for the seventh time in 10 games (7-1-2). Kevin Rooney scored for New Jersey, and Cory Schneider was outstandin­g in his first game in almost two months, making 27 saves.

CAPITALS 4, AVALANCHE 3, OT:

Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in overtime, backup Pheonix Copley made 34 saves and Washington beat Colorado to hand struggling Avalanche their fifth consecutiv­e loss. The Avalanche have lost 10 of their past 12 games and are the NHL’S worst team since Dec. 7. Colorado is 5-15-4 in that time, going from tied for the most points in the Western Conference to out of a playoff position. Semyon Varlamov stopped 38 shots, but gave up rebounds and loose pucks all night. Kuznetsov beat Varlamov on a breakaway with 48 seconds left in overtime to end it.

PANTHERS 3, PENGUINS 2, OT: Mike Matheson scored 4:14 into overtime to lift Florida over Pittsburgh. Evgenii Dadonov and Colton Sceviour also scored for the Panthers, and Aleksander Barkov had two assists. Roberto Luongo made 29 saves to help Florida win for the seventh time in nine games. Marcus Pettersson and Jared Mccann scored for the Penguins, and Casey Desmith stopped 39 shots. Kris Letang had two assists.

KINGS 3, FLYERS 2, SO: Tyler Toffoli scored the clinching goal in a shootout to lead Los Angeles to a victory Philadelph­ia, snapping the Flyers’ eightgame winning streak. The Kings appeared to have it won in regulation, but Philadelph­ia’s Jakub Voracek scored with 18.2 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime.

OILERS 4, WILD 1: Darnell Nurse gave reeling Edmonton an early boost by scoring 2:15 into the first period, and the Oilers stopped a six-game losing streak with a victory over Minnesota that sent the Wild to their fourth straight loss.

HURRICANES 6, SABRES 5, OT: Teuvo Teravainen scored his second goal of the game 3:25 into overtime and Carolina defeated Buffalo.

CANADIENS 5, JETS 2: Jonathan Drouin had two goals and two assists for his first fourpoint game and Montreal beat Winnipeg for its third straight victory.

SENATORS 4, DUCKS 0: Anders Nilsson stopped 45 shots for his first shutout of the season and Ottawa beat Anaheim. Matt Duchene led the way with two goals for the Senators.

PREDATORS 3, STARS 2, OT: Ryan Johansen scored 43 seconds into overtime and Nashville beat Dallas.

BLUES 1, LIGHTNING 0, OT: Brayden Shenn scored with 58.2 seconds left in overtime and rookie Jordan Binnington made 32 saves to help St. Louis beat Tampa Bay for its fourth straight victory.
