Cumberland scores 17, Bearcats defeat Tigers

Jarron Cumberland scored 17 points and keyed a late rally as No. 25 Cincinnati overcame a poor shooting night to beat the Memphis Tigers 69-64 on Thursday night in Memphis, Tennessee.

Justin Jenifer scored 14 and Tre Scott finished with 13 points and nine rebounds as Cincinnati (20-3, 9-1 AAC), which moved into the Top 25 this week, won its eighth straight.

Jeremiah Martin led Memphis (13-10, 5-5) with 26 points, converting 8 of 14 from 3-point range. Kyvon Davenort added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Mike Parks Jr. finished with 11 points as Memphis lost its third straight.

The Cincinnati lead was 58-55 with 2 ½ minutes left, whencumber­land scored the next nine Bearcat points to provide a buffer Memphis couldn’t overcome in the closing minute.

Cincinnati, which averages 75 points a game was stymied by a 39.7 percent shooting night (25 of 56).

Cincinnati was still trailing by 10 near the 15-minute mark of the second half, when it began chipping away at the Memphis lead. A 12-2 run fueled by a defense that forced four Memphis turnovers, brought the Bearcats even at 46-each near the midway point of the second.

NO. 12 HOUSTON 77, UCF 68: Corey Davis Jr. scored 26 points on 8-for-13 shooting and Houston (22-1, 9-1 AAC) stifled UCF (16-5, 6-3) in Orlando, Florida. NO 2. LOUISVILLE 76, NO. 15 SYRACUSE 51: Asia Durr scored 15 points to help Louisville (22-1, 9-1 ACC) beat Syracuse (17-5, 6-3) in Louisville, Kentucky.

NO. 10 MARYLAND 72, NORTHWESTE­RN 57:

Stephanie Jones had 16 points and nine rebounds, and No. 10 Maryland (21-2, 10-2 Big Ten) rolled past Northweste­rn (14-9, 7-5) in College Park, Maryland.

NO. 24 FLORIDA STATE 75, NO. 9 NC STATE 70:

Nausia Woolfolk scored 22 points, including five 3-pointers, and Florida State (20-3, 8-2 ACC) scored 10 straight points late in the fourth quarter to knock off North Carolina State (21-2, 8-2) in Tallahasse­e, Florida.

NO. 25 MIAMI 72, NO. 4 NOTRE DAME 65: Emese Hof had 21 points and 13 rebounds and Beatrice Mompremier had Mompremier 18 points and 12 rebounds as Miami (20-5, 8-2 ACC) upset Notre Dame (21-3, 8-2) in Coral Gables, Florida. The Fighting Irish were held to a season-low point total and shot 37 percent, also a season low.
