Top-ranked Vols top Gamecocks for 19th straight win

Admiral Schofield had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and topranked Tennessee used a big first-half run to cruise past South Carolina 85-73 in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Wednesday for its school-record 19th consecutiv­e victory.

The Volunteers (23-1) own the longest active winning streak in Division I and are 11-0 in the Southeaste­rn Conference for the first time in school history.

Tre Campbell had 19 points and Carlos Silva provided 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Gamecocks (1212, 7-4), who made a season-high 14 threepoint­ers but couldn’t slow Tennessee’s highpowere­d offense. The Vols, who made 9 of 20 from three-point range, took command by going on a 26-6 run that turned a 15-12 deficit into a 38-21 advantage.

NO. 13 VILLANOVA 85, PROVIDENCE 67: Eric Paschall scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half and Villanova (20-5, 11-1) rebounded from its first Big East loss by closing the game with a 23-6 run against visiting Providence (14-11, 4-8). Phil Booth added 22 points for the Wildcats, who were coming off a one-point defeat to No. 10 Marquette. Nate Watson led Providence with 18 points.

NO. 17 FLORIDA STATE 88, WAKE FOREST 66: Christ Koumadje, a 7-foot-4 center who played in his 109th career game, recorded his first career doubledoub­le with 20 points and 12 rebounds to help host Florida State (19-5, 7-4) beat Wake Forest (9-14, 2-9) in the ACC. Chaundee Brown scored 20 points for the Demon Deacons. RUTGERS 59, NORTHWESTE­RN 56: Geo Baker and Montez Mathis had 12 points each and visiting Rutgers (12-12, 5-9) notched a Big Ten victory over Northweste­rn (12-12, 3-10), which has lost five in a row. Vic Law, who finished with 17 points for the Wildcats, hit a threepoint­er with 18.2 seconds left to make it 57-56. Northweste­rn then got the ball back on a five-second call after Rutgers failed to inbound the ball. Law worked into the lane for a potential game-winner, but his 8-footer in traffic with 13 seconds to go hit off the front rim. Eugene Omoruyi made two free throws for Rutgers for the final margin. XAVIER 64, CREIGHTON 61, OT: Naji Marshall hit two three-pointers as host Xavier (12-13, 4-8) rallied to tie it at 59 in regulation, then added two more baskets in overtime for a Big East win over Creighton (13-12, 4-8) that ended a six-game losing streak. Marshall finished with 23 points, including a careerhigh five three-pointers, in a matchup of the league’s last-pace teams. Martin Krampelj led Creighton with 18 points.

WILMINGTON 67, CAPITAL 62: Jeffrey Mansfield scored 12 points and host Wilmington (17-6, 13-4) used an 11-0 run late in the second half to overtake Capital (19-5, 14-3) in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Joey Weingartne­r had 18 points, and Caleb Cox added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Crusaders, who held onto first place in the OAC despite the loss. Capital led 57-54 with 5:15 to play before the Quakers scored 11 straight to take the lead for good.

JOHN CARROLL 84, OTTERBEIN 75: Jimmy Berger had 24 points for John Carroll (11-13, 7-10), which widened a two-point lead to 10 with 2:54 to play and held off host Otterbein (6-18, 3-14) in the OAC. Jay Joseph totaled 21 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Cardinals, who were tied at 30 at halftime and trailed 58-56 at the 8:14 mark before falling behind by 10 over the next five-plus minutes.

DEPAUW 86, DENISON 81: Matt Doyle hit 13 of 21 shots and scored 37 points, but Denison (6-16, 3-13) fell behind in the first half and never regained the lead in a North Coast Athletic Conference loss at Depauw (15-8, 9-7). Nolan Ginther had 20 points for the Tigers. NO. 6 NOTRE DAME 97, BOSTON COLLEGE 47: Arike Ogunbowale scored 23 points to move into second place on Notre Dame’s all-time scoring list as the Fighting Irish (23-3, 10-2) coasted to an Atlantic Coast Conference victory at Boston College (14-11, 3-9).
