Russ Gregg, longtime high school coach, dies at 91

Russ Gregg, a boys basketball coach at Ashville, Teays Valley and Whitehall, died Monday at 91.

A 1945 graduate of Ashville Harrison, Gregg played profession­al baseball in the Brooklyn Dodgers organizati­on. He began coaching basketball in 1948. In 38 seasons, he compiled a 439-233 record with 15 conference championsh­ips. He was inducted into the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1992. Gregg also coached baseball for 17 seasons and football for seven. void left by Shazier. The Pro Bowl linebacker’s career is on hiatus while he recovers from a spinal injury suffered in a win over Cincinnati in December 2017.

The 29-year-old Barron comes to Pittsburgh from the Los Angeles Rams. Barron spent four-plus seasons with the Rams, starting 66 games while developing a reputation as a sure tackler despite being a bit undersized for the position at 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds.

Rams sign Bortles, former Jaguars QB, to back up Goff

Quarterbac­k Blake Bortles has agreed to a one-year deal to become Jared Goff’s backup with the Los Angeles Rams.

Bortles joins the Rams after spending his first five NFL seasons as the up-anddown starter for the Jacksonvil­le Jaguars, who chose him with the third overall pick in 2014.

Vontaze Burfict, one of the most heavily fined players in the NFL, signed with the Raiders after visiting the facility Tuesday.

Burfict, 28, was released by the Bengals on Monday. His defensive coordinato­r in Cincinnati was through 2017 was Paul Guenther, who now has the same position for the Raiders.
