Man injured in West Side brawl dies weeks later

A West Side man who was assaulted by several people this month in the Hilltop has died of his injuries, Columbus police said on Thursday.

A fight was reported at 11:21 p.m. on March 2 in the 500 block of South Eureka Avenue. Keith Allen Monroe, 56, of the West Side, sustained severe head injuries and paramedics took him to Ohiohealth Grant Medical Center.

Monroe succumbed to those injuries on Monday, police said in a news release Thursday.

The incident began when an unidentifi­ed assailant struck Faith Hope Mccullough, 38, of the West Side, in the face several times during an argument, a police report said.

Monroe was not involved in that incident, but he was assaulted after the initial fight was over, the report said.

A woman told a 911 dispatcher that Mccullough was beaten by a group of people on the front porch of a South Eureka Avenue home. The group then assaulted Monroe in the street as they left, the woman said.the woman told a dispatcher that Monroe was lying motionless in the middle of the street.

The victims and a pair of witnesses were unable to identify the attackers, according to the report. So far, no one has been charged as a result of the incident.

Monroe’s death marks the 22nd homicide in Columbus this year.
