Ohio State men’s lacrosse rallies past Notre Dame

Colby Smith scored off a Jackson Reid assist 52 seconds into overtime, and the fifth-ranked Ohio State men’s lacrosse team rallied from a five-goal deficit in the second half to edge 11th-ranked Notre Dame 11-10 on Saturday at Arlotta Family Lacrosse Stadium in South Bend, Indiana.

The Buckeyes (7-0) trailed 7-2 early in the second half but scored eight of the game’s next nine goals before the Irish (4-3) managed two late tallies to force overtime. Reid led Ohio State with four goals and the pivotal assist, while Tre Leclaire produced a hat trick,smith pocketed a pair of goals, and Jack Jasinski had a goal and twoassists.

Goalie Josh Kirson of Ohio State managed 10 saves andblocked a point-blank shot bybrian Willetts early in the extra session before Smith found the top corner of the cage to cap the second unbeaten nonconfere­nce slate in program history. Baseball

Starting pitcher Seth Lonsway ran his record to 3-2and struck out nine batters and allowed three earned runs in six innings as the Buckeyes (13-10) wontheir fifth consecutiv­e game with a 7-5 decision over Hawaii at Bill Davis Stadium.

Brady Cherry hit a solo homer to open the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning and finished with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Nolan Clegg added a two-run single later in the fourth, and Dominic Canzone, Conner Pohl and Zach Dezenzo each had two hits. The Rainbow Warriors (9-14) scored twice in the seventh to pull within two runs, but Ohio State closer Andrew Mango shut them out in the ninth for his fourth save.

Softball

The Buckeyes (17-9, 2-0) scored all five runs in the bottom of the first inning to top No. 22 Indiana 5-3 in a Big Ten contest at Buckeye Field.

Lilli Piper had three hits and an RBI and a run, and Bri Betschel added three hits and a run for Ohio State. Buckeyes reliever Lauren Rice improved to 9-1 with the win. She took over in the third and only allowed five hits to the Hoosiers (25-8, 0-2).

Women’s swimming

Molly Kowal earned runner-up honors in the 1,650-meter freestyle with a time of 15 minutes, 44.61 secondsto set a program record at the NCAA National Championsh­ip meet in Austin, Texas.

With the finish, Kowal becomes a two-time Allamerica­n after dropping nearly five seconds off her previous-best time. Another Ohio Stateprogr­am record fell in the 200 butterfly, where Kathrin Demler took 12th place in 1:55.06.
