Virginia’s win gives ACC five in Sweet 16

-

Top-seeded Virginia is back in the Sweet 16.

The Cavaliers got 14 points from Mamadi Diakite and 12 from Ty Jerome to clamp down on ninth-seeded Oklahoma 63-51 on Sunday night.

Virginia made it back to the round of 16 for the first time since 2016 and hopefully wiped away a stinging flameout a year ago when it became the first No. 1 seed to fall to a 16th seed in a 74-54 loss to Maryland-baltimore County.

Virginia’s win gave the Atlantic Coast Conference a national-best five teams in the Sweet 16.

The Cavaliers will face either 12th-seeded Oregon or 13th-seeded Uc-irvine in the next round.

Tulane lures Hunter from Georgia State

Less than 48 hours after Georgia State was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament, Ron Hunter decided to leave the Panthers to become Tulane’s coach.

Best known for tumbling to the court after his son hit a gamewinning shot in the 2015 tournament, Hunter said that he had received other offers in the past but thought this was perhaps his final chance to make a move.

Georgia State’s season ended with an 84-55 loss to Houston on Friday.

The 54-year-old Hunter takes over a Tulane program that fired Mike Dunleavy after the Green Wave failed to win a game in the American Athletic Conference.

California has fired coach Wyking Jones after winning just eight games in each of his first two seasons.

Athletic director Jim Knowlton announced the decision days after reports emerged that Jones had been told he would return to Cal for a third season.

Jones has three years remaining on a five-year, $5 million contract.
