Royals to extend protective netting

-

The Kansas City Royals are planning to extend the netting at Kauffman Stadium to better protect fans.

The decision comes after a fan was hit by a ball Sunday during the Royals’ game against the Detroit Tigers.

Spokesman Toby Cook told KSHB-TV the girl was kept at a hospital overnight for observation and was expected to be released Monday.

He said the club had commissioned a study on how to expand the netting before Sunday’s incident. The timing of extending the netting depends on engineering and design challenges. But Cook says more netting could be added before the season ends.

Following recommendations from Major League Baseball, the Royals in 2016 extended the netting from the outside edges of the dugouts and raised it behind home plate about 8 feet.

Tigers buy Rosenthal’s contract

The Detroit Tigers have bought the contract of pitcher Trevor Rosenthal from TripleA Toledo.

The right-hander was released by the Washington Nationals last month after going 0-1 with a 22.74 ERA in 12 appearances. He allowed 16 earned runs and eight hits with 15 walks in 6 innings.

Rosenthal missed all of last season because of elbow surgery and signed with Washington in November.

Detroit signed Rosenthal to a minor league contract June 29. He had no record in six games at Toledo, allowing six runs and eight hits in 5 innings.

Mets’ Wheeler on injured list

Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler has been placed on the 10-day injured list because of shoulder fatigue, which could complicate efforts by the out-ofcontention team to trade the right-hander before the July 31 deadline.

New York made the move retroactive to Friday, and Wheeler will be eligible to be activated July 22.

Wheeler last started July 7 and the Mets said Monday the injury was discovered following the All-star break. Steven Matz will replace Wheeler for Tuesday’s series opener at Minnesota.

GIANTS 19, ROCKIES 2, GAME 1: Brandon Crawford went 5 for 6 with two homers and tied a San Francisco team record with eight RBIS, and the Giants scored a season-high in runs in a rout of the Colorado Rockies on Monday in the first game of a split doubleheader.

Mike Yastrzemski went 4 for 6 with a homer and Buster Posey also went deep for the Giants, who earned a rare victory at Coors Field in the makeup for a May 8 rainout. Crawford has eight home runs on the season. DODGERS 16, PHILLIES 2: Cody Bellinger hit his 32nd and 33rd homers, Clayton Kershaw struck out seven in six innings and the major leagueleading Los Angeles Dodgers routed the Philadelphia Phillies. Bellinger passed reigning NL MVP Christian Yelich for the MLB lead in homers and drew “M-V-P” chants from a large group of Dodgers fans who made the crosscountry trip to Philly and nearly turned it into a home game for Los Angeles.

The vocal Dodgers faithful, sitting across several sections in the second deck in right field, taunted Bryce Harper by chanting “Over-rated!” and “Where is Harper?” after the slugger exited the game.

RED SOX 10, BLUE JAYS 8: Rookie Michael Chavis hit a grand slam, Xander Bogaerts had three hits and Andrew Benintendi drove in three runs for Boston to lead the Red Sox to a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Boston batted around for five runs in the first inning against starter Trent Thornton (3-7) and then sent 10 batters to the plate in the third, scoring five more.

RAYS 5, YANKEES 4: Travis d’arnaud hit three home runs, including a startling, three-run shot with two outs in the ninth inning off Aroldis Chapman, and the Tampa Bay Rays overcame their Yankee Stadium woes to beat New York.
