Building boom
New Canopy by Hilton among several hotel projects in works
The Canopy by Hilton, the first of many hotels planned for Columbus in the coming years, is set to open Tuesday.
The 12-story complex at 77 E. Nationwide Blvd. is next to Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse and across from the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
Created by Indus Hotels, Schottenstein Property Group and Turner Construction, the hotel will have 167 rooms, four of them suites.
The interior is modern, with a lot of exposed brick and four outdoor patios, two of which are part of a rooftop bar on the 12th floor.
Meeting rooms on the second floor are designed for business travelers, along with a retreat area meant to be quiet and reflective. That area and a locker room with showers for those checking in early or checking out late are part of all Canopy hotels nationwide.
The building features
two restaurants — Central Market House and Goodale Station. The former is named in honor of the Central Market, which served as the economic center of Columbus from 1850 to 1966. The restaurant will feature menu items such as flatbreads, cheese puffs, salads, sandwiches and grain bowls.
Goodale Station, on the 12th floor, will feature a Southern-inspired menu and small plates, along with a rooftop bar that serves craft cocktails. Both restaurants will be open to the public. Goodale Station is set to open in mid to late August, said Alan Assaf, chief operating officer for Indus Hotels.
“There’s five or six rooftop bars in Columbus, but I don’t know any like this,” Assaf said.
Several new hotels are scheduled to open in the Short North and Greater Columbus Convention Center in the next few years.
On the way are the Moxy and Graduate hotels in the Short North, both expected to open this year; a new Hilton tower at the southern end of the convention center, to break ground in August; the AC hotel on Park Street, to open next year; and a boutique hotel in the North Market development, which was just announced.
