Reds pick up Gausman after pitcher waived
CINCINNATI — Major League Baseball's trade deadline has passed, but the Cincinnati Reds aren't done adding players to their roster.
The Reds claimed righthanded pitcher Kevin Gausman off waivers Monday. Gausman, who faced the Reds on Friday, was placed on outright waivers by the Atlanta Braves. The right-hander had a 6.19 ERA in 16 starts this season with 85 strikeouts and 27 walks in 80 innings.
Gausman missed nearly a month of the season with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. The Reds’ Nick Senzel is congratulated by Luis Castillo after scoring on a first-inning double by Jose Peraza on Monday night against the Angels. The Reds won 7-4. See Dispatch.com for details.
He was traded to the Braves last summer. He
had a 3.92 ERA in 31 starts during the 2018 season with the Braves and Baltimore Orioles.
"We don't win the NL East last year without what Kevin Gausman did for us those last two months, especially when the offense went cold," Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. "We want to thank him for being a huge part of us winning the division last year."
After an encouraging performance in his first start coming off the injured list this season, Gausman was rocked in his final two starts for Atlanta, surrendering 11 earned runs, 17 hits and four homers in 10 innings.
In an interesting twist, Gausman was claimed by the team that handed him a 7-3 loss Friday in which he allowed five runs and eight hits in five innings.
A corresponding roster move will be announced once Gausman reports to the Reds. Gausman, 28, had a $9.35 million salary this season.
The Reds will pick up around $3 million, which is prorated for the final two months of the year.
Gausman was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2012 draft out of LSU.
He will be eligible for his third year of arbitration in the offseason. He can become a free agent following the 2020 season.
