Man fatally stabbed his roommate, police say

When Columbus police officers responded Monday night to a 911 call on Stoddart Avenue on the Near East Side, they found a young man in the street bleeding from a stab wound to his chest.

The 20-yearold victim was transporte­d to Ohiohealth Grant Medical Center, where he died at 10:49 p.m., police said. The were withholdin­g his identity Tuesday night pending notificati­on of family.

Officers were told by neighbors that the victim resided in a duplex on the 300 block of Stoddart. When police went inside, they reporting seeing an “obvious” crime scene. An open door led police to check the adjoining unity of the duplex, where they found Gregory Alan Huish, 57, hiding in an attic crawl space, court records show.

Huish’s clothes were covered in fresh blood and a kitchen knife recovered from the scene helped lead Columbus homicide detectives to charge him with murder in the stabbing death of his roommate, court records state.

During an interview, detectives said, Huish told them he stabbed his roommate in the chest with a knife after the two were involved in a physical argument about 10:15 p.m. at their duplex.

Huish told detectives he stabbed the victim once with a kitchen knife, then fled to the other half of the duplex to hide from police, a court affidavit states.

The incident originally was reported as a shooting by Columbus police, based on calls to 911 from people in the neighborho­od.

The death is the city’s 66th homicide so far this year.
