San Diego State defeats Fresno State, stays unbeaten

Malachi Flynn scored 16 points and Matt Mitchell had 15 for No. 13 San Diego State, which beat Fresno State 61-52 on Wednesday in San Diego to remain one of two undefeated teams nationally.

Mitchell had three big baskets in the second half in his first start of the season and Flynn, a transfer guard, scored his 1,000th point as SDSU (14-0, 3-0 Mountain West) is off to its best start since 2010-11 with Kawhi Leonard at the helm.

Jarred Hyder scored 23 for Fresno State (4-10, 0-3), which was without leading scorer Nate Grimes.

Wichita State rallies past East Carolina

Erik Stevenson scored 17 points to help No. 24 Wichita State outlast East Carolina 75-69 on Wednesday in Wichita, Kansas.

Stevenson scored 10 of his 17 points after halftime for the Shockers (12-1, 1-0 American), who trailed midway through the second half thanks to East Carolina’s Jayden Gardner scoring 20 of his 29 points after halftime.

J.J. Miles scored 12 points for the Pirates (6-8, 0-1), and Tremont Robinson-white added 11.

Flamengo’s Barbosa wins player of year poll

Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa was named “King of the Americas.”

The 23-year-old won the South American player of the year in a poll of journalist­s across the continent. It’s organized each year by Uruguayan newspaper El Pais.

Barbosa was the top scorer in his Rio de Janeiro team’s title-winning campaigns in the Copa Libertador­es and the Brazilian championsh­ip.

Barbosa, nicknamed “Gabigol,” scored 43 goals in 2019 to match Neymar’s best seasons in 2010 and 2012.

Reds sign right-hander to minor-league contract

The Cincinnati Reds signed right-handed pitcher Tyler Thornburg to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.
