Cheers for cow diet, forgiven riot, golfing quiet

-

What do you call a golf tournament without fans? Smart! It surely wasn’t easy for the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village to pass up the opportunity to be the first PGA Tour event to welcome back spectators, even at just 20% of capacity. But director Dan Sullivan would have been wrong to tee up a chance for golf fans to come home with more than a sunburn. Instead, he aced this one.

It might be good for Attorney General Dave Yost to watch out for tax dodgers and protect in-state purveyors of wine and liquor. But suing to halt the ability of Ohio consumers to order adult beverages from a few out-of-state sellers seems cruel amid a coronavirus crisis that makes trips to local retailers tricky. A toast for style points, though, to state liquor agents who capped off their investigation by having liquor shipped directly from one target company to the Ohio Division of Liquor Control.

You know what they say about death and taxes. What wasn’t certain about paying the taxman in April is now upon us, and the bill comes due on Wednesday. That goes for Uncle Sam and the state of Ohio, as well as most municipal and school income taxes that you might owe.

Meet Mr. Irrepressible: Short North shopkeeper Dionte Johnson. The owner of Sole Classics has refused to let rioting vandals who plundered his sneakers and streetwear store on May 29 dim his commitment to raise up Black youth and show them positive pathways for their future. He refused to press charges against teenagers shown in videos to have looted his shop and instead urged the community to join him in showing love to troubled young people in need of helping hands.

Columbus is tops in the country for cranking out home sales in record time. Real-estate web service Zillow found in a new study that it took a median of just five days to sell a home in Columbus, and just a day more in Cincinnati, which tied with Kansas City for the secondhottest home market in the country. That’s great for sellers, but it makes for buyers’ headaches and heartaches. Low inventory is a factor as more homeowners are staying put while coronavirus clouds their crystal balls.

While taking care of civic responsibilities, make sure that filling out the 2020 census is checked off your list. The response rate in Columbus was reported to be below expectations last week. Complying online is easy at my2020census.gov, and it’s way better than having a stranger knocking on your door in August if you haven’t responded by then.

If your Cheerios tasted especially yummy this morning, you might have a Coshocton County “dietician for cows” to thank. Jesse Whinnery has turned a lifelong love of dairy farming into a unique job description. He travels four central Ohio counties — Coshocton, Holmes, Knox and Licking — helping farmers coax the best milk possible from their cattle.
