One death among weekend shootings

Columbus police responded to a homicide and a string of other shootings, including one that wounded a 3-year-old, as a rash of violence in the city continues.

According to police, officers were called to the 400 block of Southwood Avenue on the city’s South Side around 4:10 p.m. Sunday on a report of a shooting.

Officers found 26-year-old Jerome Steward, of the East Side, with a gunshot wound. Police said they used a tourniquet and performed CPR until medics arrived, transporti­ng Steward to Ohiohealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Steward died at 5:14 p.m. Sunday.

Police said what precipitat­ed the shooting remains under investigat­ion. Witnesses said the shooter fled the scene in a gray or silver four-door car with Pennsylvan­ia license plates.

Officers also arrested one suspect and identified another in a West Side homicide that took place on July 11.

According to police, Robert Bedard, 25, of the Northeast Side, was found shot outside a home on the 1100 block of Mccarley Drive East, on the West Side, on July 11.

Police have arrested Bryan Lazo, 16, of the West Side, who has been charged with a delinquenc­y count of murder in Franklin County Juvenile Court.

A second suspect, Kevin G. Real, 18, of the East Side, remains at large. He is considered armed and dangerous.

In addition, police are investigat­ing the circumstan­ces surroundin­g at least six other shootings Saturday and Sunday.

According to police, the shootings injured six people ranging in age from 3 to 62.

The 3-year-old, who has not been named by police, was shot while sleeping on a couch inside a home on the 500 block of Woodbury Avenue on the West Side around 3 a.m. Saturday.

The child suffered a minor injury and will recover.

All of those who were injured are expected to fully recover from their injuries. No arrests have been made in any of the shootings.

Police are also investigat­ing a stabbing that occurred on the 2100 block of Eakin Road, on the Southwest Side, Sunday afternoon. One person was taken to Ohiohealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition. No additional informatio­n about the incident has been released.

The six shootings on Saturday and Sunday come after four people were injured by gunfire while attending a vigil for a homicide victim near Weinland Park on Friday night.
