Holmes County Fair cancels many events

- Kevin Lynch

MILLERSBURG — With a majority of board members expressing concerns raised by the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic, the Holmes County Fair Board announced Thursday that it has decided to cancel all grandstand events at this year’s fair, which is Aug. 10-15.

The health and safety of fair patrons, exhibitors, vendors and staff is a top priority, the board said, as it balances conducting a fair during this time.

Events canceled include the rodeo, truck and tractor pull, motocross, drag racing and demolition derby.

Those who already have purchased reserved grandstand seating may obtain a refund by presenting their tickets during fair office hours.

This decision comes because of concerns that fairgoers wouldn’t be able to maintain 6-foot distancing in seating, according to the fair board. This mandate was emphasized during a phone conference with Gov. Mike Dewine and Ohio Fair Managers Association members on Wednesday.

In addition, financial concerns related to the inability to fill seats represents a significant loss of revenue, a risk the board said it cannot afford to take.

Most remaining scheduled events for this year’s fair will move forward as planned at this time.

Fair admission is being reduced, with free admission to the grounds Aug. 10-14 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission from 3 to 9 p.m. weeknights and all-day Aug. 15 is reduced to $5. Kids 10 years old and younger will be admitted for free.

With many other events still planned, the board said fairgoers can have an enjoyable visit to the fair.

The board said it will continue to work closely with local health officials and state mandates for fairs to provide a safe, fun-filled week. Fairgoers will see additional signage, sanitizing stations and distancing requirements, as well as other subtle changes.

Kissel Amusements, which already has provided rides to other fairs in the state this year, will meet all requirements for sanitizing.

Food vendors will be properly distanced and will operate under guidelines from the Holmes County Board of Health.

All livestock shows and the sale nights will go on, and additional seating will be available near the show arenas to provide social distancing. Stage on the Green activities will proceed — bench seating will be available, and patrons wishing to attend a stage event may also bring lawn chairs. Commercial vendors will offer “static” unmanned or limited-staff booths.
