App helps organize digital movies, buy new ones

- Katie Walsh

With so many streaming services crowding the market, it can be a lot to navigate for a parent. Especially when little kids tend to go on movie benders: watching the same thing over and over again.

Is it worth it to subscribe to a streaming service for the variety of choice, or is it better to purchase a physical or digital copy for repeat viewings?

Your mileage may vary as a parent, of course. I know I have enough of a hard time keeping track of my “to watch” lists across streaming services (thank goodness for Justwatch.com). There are a few apps and solutions for keeping track of your digital copies, including the (new to me) app Movies Anywhere.

Movies Anywhere is for those who like to collect films rather than indulge in a lot of choice. It used to be known as Disney Movies Anywhere, but now includes titles from the major Hollywood studios, including Sony, Universal and Warner Brothers, and it serves as a sort of digital locker for keeping movie purchases. It integrates with itunes, as well as Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, Fandango Now and more, so you can streamline all your purchases from those platforms across one app.

The other great feature of Movies Anywhere is the ability to redeem the digital copy codes from your Blu-ray or DVD copies and easily access the digital copies in one place.

It’s a great choice for kids who bear repeat viewings of their favorite films, and the website has easy-to-access curated collections. Exploring their site, one of the first collections to come up was “Family Movie Night,” with the subcategories of “Animated Action,” “Adventure for All” and “Keeping the Family Together.” There’s also a “Summer Movie Fun” selection with a wide variety of summer-themed entertainment, from family-oriented films to more mature content.

The front page features New Releases and Daily Deals, as well as collections based on production companies such as Dreamworks or Favorite Snack Food movies. It’s a place to find and purchase new movies, as well as organize and collect the ones you already own across itunes, Amazon, Google, even physical copies with digital codes. With a bit of effort to organize and set it up, this seems like an ideal set up to easily access your digital movie collection.

Common Sense Media rounded up a few of the best titles for kids on the platform, including Disney animated features from the 1951 “Alice in Wonderland” to the 2013 phenomenon “Frozen,” Charlie Brown specials, Lego movies, “Paddington 2” and many more.

All these films are available on other platforms of your choice, but Movies Anywhere is merely the tool to streamline your streaming purchases, which we could all use right now.
