Face mask dispute lands Canton man behind bars

A Canton man arguing with his girlfriend over a face mask covering was jailed, accused of assaulting her and ripping parts from her car, rendering it inoperable.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at 1 p.m. Sunday in Canton by Stark County Sheriff’s deputies.

According to Stark County Jail records, he and the woman were arguing about the mask when he punched her in the stomach, smacked her in the face and scratched her left arm. Then he opened the hood of her car and ripped out “several cable wires that left the vehicle inoperable.”

He was jailed on misdemeano­r charges of domestic violence and criminal damaging.

The man remained behind bars Monday, held in lieu of $10,000 bond pending a Canton Municipal Court hearing.

Hit-and-run crash involving SUV, buggy leaves four hurt

A hit-and-run crash in northeaste­rn Ohio involving a car and a horsedrawn buggy left two adults and two children injured, authoritie­s said.

The accident happened Sunday night on Route 250 in Greenwich Township, when the southbound car driven by Renold Workman, 58, of Vermilion, rearended the buggy, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Workman fled the scene but was later found in nearby Ashland County, authoritie­s said.

All four people in the buggy were ejected, authoritie­s said. A 51-yearold woman and a 15-year-old girl were being treated at a hospital for undisclose­d injuries, while a 53-yearold man and an 11-year-old boy were treated at the scene for minor injuries. Their names were not released. Workman was not injured. No charges have been filed so far, but he accident remains under investigat­ion.

Woman in stolen car follows deputy for 11 miles

A Butler County Sheriff’s sergeant was driving to work in his marked patrol vehicle about 7 a.m. Sunday when he noticed a vehicle followed him — for 11 miles.

Sgt. Mike Matala noticed the vehicle following him from Wayne Madison Road and Trenton Road in Trenton following him for 11 miles matching his turns to a parking lot on Bobmeyer Road in Fairfield, according to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

Matala said the driver of the vehicle committed a few moving violations so when the vehicle followed into the parking lot, he initiated a traffic stop.

The driver, Christina King of Middletown, was driving a stolen B-safe Driver Education car. When asked why she was following the him, she replied, “She just wanted to see where he was going,” according to police reports.

King, 37, was arrested on a felony charge of receiving stolen property. She is being held without bail in the Butler County Jail pending an initial appearance in Hamilton Municipal Court, according to the Butler County Jail website.

Brook Park parade celebrates resident’s 103rd birthday

It was a party on wheels as family, friends and neighbors in Brook Park honored Dorothy Makuch on her 103rd birthday on Saturday.

A colorful birthday banner stretched across the front yard, and Mayor Mike Gammella presented Makuch a proclamati­on from the city.

A Brook Park resident for more than 60 years, one of Makuch’s fondest childhood memories was seeing legendary aviator Charles Lindbergh in person as he walked along the street.
