One dead in fiery crash that set Cuyahoga River on fire

-

A fiery crash killed one person, closed traffic on Route 8, sent smoke billowing across Akron and prompted the evacuation of nearby homes and businesses.

The fire also spread from a storm sewer to the Cuyahoga River before it was extinguished.

The crash happened about 7:45 a.m. Tuesday. A tanker truck and a still-unidentified vehicle collided, causing both to catch fire. The blaze was fueled by gas from the tanker truck and an unknown flammable liquid the tanker was transporting.

The crash closed traffic on Route 8 — the main highway connecting Akron with its northern suburbs — for hours.

Authorities were still determining how many drivers or occupants may have been involved in the crash. The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office was investigating one fatality from the crash. The person’s identity and gender were not determined as of early Tuesday afternoon.

Soon after the crash, nearby homes and businesses were evacuated because of explosion concerns.

Near the border of Akron and Cuyahoga Falls, firefighters battled a small fire in the Cuyahoga River.

The large fire on the Akron side of the river was quickly under control and extinguished, Cuyahoga Falls Asst. Chief Chris Martin said.

It’s still unclear how the fluids from the crash site reached the river and whether any sewers were involved or damaged, he said.

All Miami student-athletes put under quarantine

After learning 27 Miami University student-athletes from various teams have tested positive for COVID-19, the Butler County General Health District quarantined those who have returned to Oxford, and any coaches and staff who were in contact with them.

Many, but not all of the athletes, had attended an off-campus social gathering over a week ago. The health district issued the blanket quarantine order to ensure no student-athletes would be missed through the normal method of contact tracing.

Miami began its fall semester Aug. 17 with all undergraduate courses being offered remotely. Move-in for incoming first-year students is scheduled the week of Sept. 14, with face-to-face instruction planned to resume Sept. 21.
