Ohio State defensive lineman Haskell Garrett was shot in the face in the University District early Sunday morning after attempting to break up a fight between two people, he told Columbus police.

Garrett, 22, was walking toward the 400 block of Chittenden Avenue when he noticed a man and a woman “arguing and being aggressive,” according to a copy of a police report obtained by The Dispatch.

In response, Garrett asked the man to stop fighting with the woman before the man fired his handgun at him. Garrett, who was struck once, said he did not know either person.

Police later found a gun shell at the scene and a trail of blood that led to an apartment about a half-mile away.

Garrett ran toward the apartment, which is where a friend lives. No further details were included in the report

Columbus police spokesman Sgt. James Fuqua said no suspects have been identified in the case.

After being transported to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

in stable condition, Garrett was discharged from the hospital Monday, a team spokesman said.

Ahead of his release, Ohio State coach Ryan Day issued a statement updating Garrett’s status.

“Haskell Garrett has been receiving excellent care at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for the injuries he received on Sunday,” Day said. “We anticipate he will be released from the medical center this morning.

“On behalf of his family and this football program, we would like to thank all those who have been a part of Haskell’s treatment, and we are grateful that he will be heading home today. We will continue to help him and his family any way we can to expedite his recovery”

Garrett is a senior who was expected to start on the Buckeyes’ defensive line before the Big Ten canceled the season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2019, Garrett was credited with 10 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss while appearing in 10 games as a backup. brabinowitz@dispatch.com @brdispatch jkaufman@dispatch.com @joeyrkaufman
