Ohio sets daily record for COVID cases again

Ohio hit yet another record for new coronaviru­s cases reported in a single day Wednesday.

Another 2,366 Ohioans tested positive for the coronaviru­s as of Wednesday, according to the Ohio Department of Health. The new record is 132 more than the previous record of 2,234 cases set on Saturday.

Total hospitaliz­ations for COVID-19 also hit another record in Ohio on Wednesday. As of Wednesday, a total of 1,252 Ohioans were hospitaliz­ed with the virus, including 345 in ICUS and 164 on ventilator­s, according to the state health department.

An additional 135 Ohioans were reported to be hospitaliz­ed for COVID-19 as of Wednesday. That's above a three-week average of 96 new hospitaliz­ations reported per day, state data shows.

Admissions to intensive care units across the state increased Wednesday by 35, which is more than the threeweek average of 16 new ICU admissions a day.

Wednesday's record is the sixth time in a week that new daily reported cases have shot above 2,000, state data shows.

Deaths on Wednesday rose by 66, which is more than the three-week average of 16 new deaths reported per day. So far, the virus has killed 5,149 Ohioans, according to the state health department.

Despite hitting another record number of cases in a single day, the average positive test rate for Ohioans the past seven days remained at 4.9% Monday, the most recent day for which data is available, according to the state. More than 4 million COVID-19 tests have been administer­ed in Ohio since the pandemic began in March.

Franklin County added 243 new cases and four new deaths Wednesday, amounting to a 0.78% increase in cases and a 0.6% increase in deaths, data shows. In total, Franklin County has reported 31,221 cases and 639 deaths, according to the state.

Cuyahoga County has reported the highest number of deaths with 682 and the second-highest number of cases at 19,586. Hamilton County has reported the third-highest number of cases at 16,496 and Lucas County has reported the third most deaths with 373, according to the state mfilby@dispatch.com @Maxfilby
