BIG TEN ROUNDUP
INDIANA 24, MICHIGAN STATE 0
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michael Penix Jr. threw for 320 yards and hit Ty Fryfogle for two touchdown passes as No. 10 Indiana remained unbeaten with an easy victory over Michigan State on Saturday.
The Hoosiers set up a showdown next weekend against Ohio State, the only other unbeaten team in the Big Ten East.
Penix threw two interceptions in the first half, but that didn’t matter much. The Spartans were just as sloppy – to the point where quarterback Rocky Lombardi was pulled in the second quarter.
Fryfogle had 11 catches for 200 yards – both career highs. e did most of that in the first two quarters, when all the game’s scoring occurred.
NEBRASKA 30, PENN STATE 23
LINCOLN, Neb. – Luke Mccaffrey had a hand in two touchdowns in his first start, Nebraska’s defense made two huge late defensive stops and the Cornhuskers held on to beat Penn State for their first win Saturday.
Mccaffrey took over for Adrian Martinez, who had started all of his 23 previous games at Nebraska but turned in flat performances in the Cornhuskers’ first two games.
Mccaffrey looked good in the first half, but the Huskers generated only three points in the second and Penn State came back from a 21-point deficit to make it close.
A Top 10 team to start the season, the Lions are off to their worst start since Joe Paterno’s 2001 team also opened with four straight losses.
LATE FRIDAY IOWA 35, MINNESOTA 7
MINNEAPOLIS – Tyler Goodson rushed for a career-high 142 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, and Iowa’s defense clamped down hard on
Minnesota for a victory on Friday night that gave the Hawkeyes possession of the Floyd of Rosedale trophy for the sixth season.
Jack Koerner and Riley Moss each picked off Tanner Morgan for the Gophers quarterback’s first two-interception game in two years, and Zach VanValkenburg had three of the team’s four sacks. Iowa’s defense has a streak of 11 straight games with at least one interception.
The Hawkeyes had to wait to hoist the 98-pound bronze pig until they reached the locker room out of respect to the virus protocols required to get the season going, but their 16th win in the last 20 games against their borderstate rival to the north was just as sweet.
Minnesota’s Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 144 yards on 33 attempts, but the junior tailback who entered the evening with the highest rushing average in the FBS didn’t come close to controlling the game like the last two weeks.
