Smidl, Marie
1920 - 2021
Marie Smidl was born and raised in Chicago, the 4th of five children, born to
Ruzena and Rudolf Janda; Elsie (Albert) Harkey, Rose (Paul) Rudish, Emily (Henry) Smidl (Marie and Emily married brothers), and Rudolph (Florence) Janda. All are deceased, except Florence, sister-in-law, who resides in Wisconsin. Marie married Frank Smidl April 13, 1941, and they shared a “love nest”, a
converted attic flat in her
parent’s home. In August, 1942, Rosemarie Frances was born. Six years later, Thomas Frank, their infant son, died of a heart condition which today would be curable. In 1970 Marie and Frank retired to Cotter, Arkansas, where they both
served the VFW Post. Frank
passed away in 1997, and
a year later, Marie moved
to Columbus, to be near Rosie and John Mitchell. She spent 19 years in apartment 803 at Heritage Tower with her cat, Panda, and later her parakeet, Precious. Marie was a wonderful Bohemian cook and
attentive hostess. She went
out to eat with Rosie and John, and to his band gigs. The band members affectionately called Marie their
“groupie”. Marie loved all
the music, and continued to enjoy music programs at Mother Angeline Mccrory
Manor, where she lived the
last two years. She was a regular at the Monday morning Bingo games, with
Rosie, before Covid 19. Marie loved life. She loved
blue skies and clouds, admired the walls along
the freeway, and salivated over the raspberries Rosie and John brought her every
few days. Her memory is a blessing to all who knew
her. Marie is survived by
daughter, Rosemarie Rosie,
and John Mitchell “son”. Surviving grandchildren are
