- Bethany Bruner and Eric Lagatta

Columbus police homicide detectives are investigating separate, unrelated shootings that left two men with critical, life-threatening injuries.

The first shooting was reported around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday outside Van’s Carryout, located at 1270 W. Town St. in Franklinton.

Police said 51-year-old Jimmy Crum, of Franklinton, was working at the carryout when the shooting took place.

According to police, there was a fight inside the store earlier in the afternoon Tuesday when Crum and another employee threw out at least one person. That person, who had not been identified by police as of early afternoon Wednesday, made threats to come back and shoot the employees.

A short time later, police said the person came back, with a group of people, and began fighting with Crum outside the carryout. During that fight, shots were fired. Crum was critically injured and taken to Ohiohealth Grant Medical Center.

Because of the severity of Crum’s injuries, homicide detectives are investigating.

On Wednesday morning, police were called to the East Side to investigate a shooting that left another man critically injured.

The shooting was reported around 6:15 a.m. Wednesday on the 1900 block of East Livingston Avenue near Alum Creek Drive.

According to police, a man was found inside a car at a gas station at the intersection with a gunshot wound. The man was taken to Ohiohealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition.

Homicide detectives were called because of the severity of the man’s injuries. No additional information was immediately available.

Detectives have also identified a man who was shot inside a home on the South Side last week.

Fred Thomas, 28, of the South Side, was found shot inside a house on the first block of Reeb Avenue around 12:55 a.m. Feb. 5.

Another man, identified on a police report as 45-year-old Thomas Cannon, of the South Side, was also found shot inside the home.

Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene. His death was the city’s 25th homicide in 2021. Cannon was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

Police have not identified any suspects in the case.

Anyone with information on any of the shootings is asked to call detectives at 614-645-4730 or provide information anonymously to Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461TIPS. bbruner@dispatch.com @beth_bruner elagatta@dispatch.com @Ericlagatta
