Marsalis plans trip to Lincoln Theatre for online show

- Peter Tonguette

Widely celebrated trumpeter, composer and bandleader Wynton Marsalis will make a surprise stop in Columbus next month, the Jazz Arts Group announced Monday.

On March 8, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra – a 15-member, New Yorkbased ensemble of which Marsalis is the managing and artistic director – will perform at the Lincoln Theatre, 769 E. Long St.

Although no in-person audience members will be in attendance, the concert will be livestreamed for free at 8 p.m. on the digital performance platform of the Jazz Arts Group, JAG TV. A previously recorded interview between Marsalis and Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center Principal and Director Milton Ruffin will precede the live concert at 7 p.m.

A 59-year-old native of New Orleans – himself the son of jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis Jr. – Marsalis is the winner of nine Grammy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Music, the latter awarded for his jazz composition on the subject of slavery in the United States, “Blood on the Fields.”

The Jazz Arts Group, the parent organization of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, is presenting the event along with PNC Arts Alive, Denison University and an anonymous donor. The concert had not been previously announced as part of the Jazz Arts Group’s current 2020-21 season.

“Projects such as these prove that both jazz and the spirit of collaboration are alive and well in Columbus even during uncertain times,” Jazz Arts Group CEO Press Southworth III said in a statement, adding, “And with our new online performance platform – JAG TV – we’re bringing the in-concert experience right into people’s homes.”

Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, which operates under the umbrella of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York, last performed in central Ohio in December 2016 on the campus of Denison University.
