Everyone, teachers included, wants to get students back in classrooms

-

In response to Mr. Sigrist Jr.’s Tuesday letter “Teachers’ unions standing in the way ...,” I would like to offer my perspective as a two-term member of the Westerville City School District Board of Education (only speaking for myself, not other board members).

My nearly eight-year experience is: Teachers unions have never approached me to “stand in the way” of science regarding going “all-in” during this pandemic. They have openly advocated for the health and safety of their members (while seeking ways to serve their students). Why should they do otherwise?

District leaders have never approached me to force the issue of going “all-in,” but have tried to balance the desire for the best approach to education, and the wisdom shared by our local, state and national health experts. Why should they do otherwise?

Parents and community members have never approached me and “demanded” they get their way or else. The parents of our students (of which I am one), are simply advocating for what they believe is the best approach and process for educating those they love and value during this once-in-a-lifetime situation. Why should they do otherwise?

I have grown weary of the finger-pointing and accusations. We, all of us in the education world, are trying to do our best for the students we love and care for. My firsthand experience? No one is standing in the way of that goal.
