President, allies on reckless tax-and-spend policy path

- Your Turn Jane Timken Guest columnist

Now more than ever, we need fewer taxes, less government intervention and less regulation.

Benjamin Franklin famously said “in this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.”

I’d add one more to that list: that Democrats will raise your taxes.

Though Ohioans have a little more time to file this year, April 15 is a yearly reminder of the frustrations that come with Tax Day and the government’s constant hand in our families’ cookie jars.

As our country begins to turn a corner from the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to President Donald Trump and his administration’s work on creating a vaccine that is fueling our economic recovery, Joe Biden is proposing a multitude of taxes that would stifle the economy, destroy jobs and harm Ohio families.

Right out of the gate, Biden proposed a $2 trillion bill disguised as COVID “relief ” that had very little to do with directly combating the pandemic. Less than 10%, in fact.

Now, Joe Biden is proposing yet another $2.3 trillion bill that is “infrastructure” in name only.

Five percent of the bill is earmarked for roads, highways, bridges and other traditional projects. Only 2% of this bill is dedicated to airways, waterways and ports. So where is the rest of that $2.3 trillion going? Unfortunately, to far-left agenda items that Democrats and their liberal allies have been chomping at the bit to pass for years, including giving more power to special interests.

Biden’s plan calls for passing the radical PRO Act, which gives increased control to union bosses while hurting workers and costing businesses $47 billion every year. Four hundred billion dollars is for an “unrelated” program for home care that “was a top demand of some union groups.”

Hundreds of billions of dollars are being spent on climate regulation and to subsidize the electric vehicle industry – clearly a first step toward the radical Green New Deal.

What’s worse, Biden’s bill comes with $1.8 trillion in tax hikes – the largest tax hike in decades – that would directly threaten Ohio’s middle class. The Tax Foundation estimates that these taxes would kill 159,000 jobs, shrink the economy and cut wages for low-income Americans.

The federal tax rate on businesses would be increased to 28%, meaning the U.S. would have a higher business tax rate than communist China.

Couple these tax increases with the tax hikes Biden has promised in the coming weeks, including raising the death tax and taxes on small businesses, and our economic outlook is bleak.

Now more than ever, we need fewer taxes, less government intervention and less regulation. As your U.S. senator, that is what I will fight for.

In Washington, I will work to advance an America First agenda that not long ago created the greatest economy our country has ever seen. I will protect your pocketbooks by speaking out against radical spending and dangerous tax hikes. Joe Biden and his Democrat allies are on a reckless path of taxand-spend policies that will transform our country as we know it.
