Martha Barnes-whitacre, age 70, of Columbus, OH, passed away March 12, 2021 at the Ross Heart Hospital. She was born to John Barnes and Ruth (Larsen) Barnes on July 22, 1950 at Lakewood Hospital (near Westlake, OH). She graduated from Westlake High School, and attended Bowling Green State University, where she received her undergradu­ate degree and her master’s degree, and The Ohio State University, where she earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematic­s. After working for the federal government and ITT North Electric (Delaware, OH), she became a software developer for AT&T Bell Labs (later Lucent Technologi­es) on East Broad Street,

Columbus, OH in 1986, and continued her employment there for about 15 years before retirement. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of almost 41 years, Paul C. Whitacre, Jr.; her son, Andrew Whitacre, Columbus, OH; her daughter, Jessica (Brian) Williams, Pataskala, OH; granddaugh­ters, Penelope Williams and Kaley Williams; sister, Chris (John) Sale, Monrovia, MD; sister, Peggy Smith, Powell, OH; sisterin-law, Marianne (Ronald) Tackett, West Harrison, IN; sister-in-law, Linda (William) Shamblin, Blancheste­r, OH; and numerous nephews and nieces. In her retirement, she enjoyed gardening, reading, crocheting, baking, and spending time with her granddaugh­ters. A memorial service with Pastor Nicholas Hopman

officiatin­g will be held at

Grace Evangelica­l Lutheran Church, 100 East Schrock Road, Westervill­e, OH 43081, at 10:30AM Saturday, April 17, 2021, with family receiving friends from 10AM until the time of service. Interment in the columbariu­m on church grounds will follow.
