Williams day to day, Browns count on Newsome
If the Browns need to throw Greg Newsome II to the wolves in Week 1 against the defending AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs, coach Kevin Stefanski is confident the rookie can handle the task.
The likelihood of Newsome starting opposite Denzel Ward on Sept. 12 at Arrowhead Stadium increased when fellow cornerback Greedy Williams suffered a groin injury in Sunday’s 17-13 preseason win over the visiting New York Giants.
Williams is day to day with the groin injury, Stefanski said.
“I think day to day means he’s got to rehab and see how he does tomorrow and see how the injury responds to treatment,” Stefanski said. “We have some time before you have to set the depth chart, before you have to set the 53[-man roster], all those type of things. So there’s plenty of work to do for the guys this week in practice and then with [the preseason finale] coming up [Sunday in Atlanta].”
A first-round draft pick (No. 26 overall) from Northwestern University, Newsome has had an impressive training camp this summer.
So how comfortable would the Browns be with starting Newsome in the opener?
“I think all of these guys are competing for jobs, and Greg is doing a nice job competing on the practice field and these games,” Stefanski said. “I understand that he’s a rookie, but he’s not making the same mistake twice. He’s very diligent about his work, and then ultimately if he is that guy, he’s somebody that we’re going to count on.”
Browns place Parkey on injured reserve
The Browns reached the 80-man roster limit by placing kicker Cody Parkey (quadriceps), tight end Connor Davis (shoulder) and linebacker Montreal Meander (Achiilles) on injured reserve and waiving receiver Alexander Hollins and offensive tackle Alex Taylor (ankle), the latter with an injury designation.
